How to make au gratin potatoes in the air fryer

You’ll start by making a simple roux with the butter and flour to create the creamy cheese sauce for the potatoes au gratin. Don’t be intimidated by this process, it’s actually quite simple.

MAKE A ROUX Start by melting the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in all-purpose flour until evenly incorporated and cook for about 1 minute. Gradually pour in the milk, while continuing to whisk the mixture, until everything is well incorporated and smooth.

ADD CHEESE Stir in garlic and green onions and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute, then add cheese, salt and pepper. Stir until combined and smooth again.

DIVIDE INTO CUPS Coat the glass cups with nonstick spray and divide the potato mixture between the cups. Place the cups in the basket of your deep fryer and cook for only 9 to 10 minutesuntil the potatoes are bubbling everywhere!

Which air fryer is the best?

I often get this question whenever I post a new air fryer recipe. personally I like it Gourmia 7 Quart Air Fryer.

You can usually find it at Costco for a bargain, but it’s also available on Amazon also.

For this particular recipe, we use the basket style air fryer, which is what I prefer as opposed to the toaster oven style. I believe this recipe would work well in both styles.

Safe Air Fryer Containers

In order to cook these potatoes in the air fryer, the cups used must be air fryer safe.

You can use glass or ceramic or even silicone containers in the air fryer. Please do not use plastic in the air fryer, because it will melt and cause damage.

I found these fantastic 1 cup Pyrex glass containers which come with a lid for easy storage. They work perfectly for this recipe.

Prepare au gratin potatoes in advance

The best part about this recipe is that you can easily prep these potatoes, cover them with a lid before cooking, and place them in the fridge for up to 4 days!

To cook, simply remove the lid, place it in your air fryer and cook!

This makes it ideal for cooking in small batches, or when you want to eat cheesy potatoes but don’t want to whip up a whole casserole!
